Do you have any thought-terminating clichés? Are you sure?
So thought-terminating clichés, what are they? Coined in a book called “Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism,” a book written in 1956 about brainwashing in China, A thought-terminating cliché is a commonly used phrase, sometimes passing as folk wisdom, used to quell cognitive dissonance. Though the phrase in and of itself may be valid […]
Reader Questions: Fundraising for a park-How can you identify visitors?
Hey Mazarine, The issues I’m finding toughest to crack right now are around squeezing the most out of small budgets while making the most of new channels. To some extent, thus my recent Twitter learning experiment! We have more than 800,000 people coming to our parks and events every year, but mostly we don’t know […]
400 Americans have more wealth than half of all Americans combined.
Did you see Michael Moore’s speech? Transcript below. America Is NOT Broke by Michael Moore MichaelMoore.com March 5, 2011 America is not broke. Contrary to what those in power would like you to believe so that you’ll give up your pension, cut your wages, and settle for the life your great-grandparents had, America is not […]
What does an LGBTQ nonprofit organization do?
In 2001, a friend of mine came out to me. He had never told anyone he was gay. He was 20. He didn’t know where any resources were, despite living near Provincetown and Boston his whole life. Since I didn’t know a lot about various LGBTQ organizations, I pointed him to the now sadly defunct Planet Out (which now redirects to Gay.com), where I thought he might be able to find more people in the community. Then we went to Jacques Cabaret, a piano bar, but we couldn’t get in because I forgot my ID.
A reader emailed me recently and asked me to please please blog about something that she sees a lot, namely, people not understanding why we have all of these LGBTQ organizations, and why they are different, why we need them.
Managing up when your boss is not a fundraiser!
If your boss does not understand fundraising, give them a 2 minute explanation of how fundraising works. Show them that they’ll get the best bang for their buck from major gifts, and individuals, and the least from foundations, corporations, and events. There are graphs from Giving USA and Philanthropy Reports that go into detail about […]
Reader Questions: Humane Society Fundraising, how to overcome: “I only give to people”
I would make the case by saying, “We are speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves.” Ask them if you would ask a baby to speak up for itself if it was being abused by parents. Ask if you would tell a person who was mentally handicapped to speak up for themselves. If it’s cruelty that you oppose and dignity that you promote, show how these values are universal. The more you get in front of people and teach them about the beauty of being a pet owner, and the sadness of an abused pet, the more money you will get. It’s all about asking, all the time.
