What did you do this weekend?
I saw the Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 this weekend. The theatre was packed. I have to say there were parts I had to leave the room for. It was so violent and I couldn’t take it. But I came back in after the main scary part was over. No spoilers, I promise!
I’ve been watching the series of 4 movies slowly over the last several months. I’d highly encourage you to watch it. It’s cinematic storytelling at its most riveting. There’s conflict in practically every scene. Katniss doesn’t want to kill. She doesn’t want to create alliances. She doesn’t want to be a sex symbol. She doesn’t want to be in the hunger games. She wants to survive, and in the games there are so many people and other things that try to kill her.
What was the message I took from the 4 film series?
I’ve watched a girl start to understand what was wrong with the world, but be unsure of how to fix it.
I’ve watched a girl become a hero.
I’ve watched this girl become a woman, and a symbol of hope for a people.
I’ve watched her succeed against incredible odds.
I’ve watched her battle with terrible memories, and a desperate need for justice.
I’ve watched her create allegiances to stay alive.
I’ve watched powerful women and men try to control her.
I’ve watched her suffer.
I’ve watched as she speaks truth to power, and gives voice to the people who are oppressed, suffering or dead.
I’ve watched her, finally, create her own destiny, against all odds.
And you know who she reminds me of?
She reminds me of you, dear fundraiser.
Katniss Everdeen’s heroism reminds me of you.
with your understanding of what is wrong with the world,
with your wondering how to fix it
with you learning how to motivate people to take action
with your stories of how terrible it could be unless they do something
with your nonprofit’s work being a symbol of hope for your donors
with your propos trying to win people over, to get them to act.
with your allegiances with other nonprofits, and other individuals, to survive in your work.
with powerful people trying to control what you do
with your speaking truth to power
with your words that give voice to the people who are oppressed, suffering, or dead.
This whole story, this whole miraculous series, it’s the story of a woman learning to speak truth to power, to motivate people to action, and to do what she feels is right, even if it goes against everything she’s been taught.
It’s the birth of a fundraiser.
She reminds me of us
What truly lies inside all of us.
Did you see this movie?
What did you think?
You stop short of saying that Katniss Everdeen finds true bliss and happiness in what she worked so hard for: living in peace, being married and raising a family. Her actions also made it possible for the the members of all the districts.
