“Life is pretty bleak at the top, too. All the baubles of the rich are phony compensation for the loss of community, loss of connection, loss of meaning. Everyone wants to live a life of meaning. Today we live in a money economy. We don’t depend on the gifts of others. We buy everything. It’s really hard to create community when the underlying knowledge is that we don’t need each other.”
“Joint consumption does not create connection. Only joint creativity and gifts create intimacy and connection.”
This is a shout out to my friend Sabrina Gogol, a late birthday present. Sabrina, you were right all along.
We need to create community to create social change. Give gifts. And have joint creativity together.

This is so true! Thx for the reminder, I’m going to connect with a friend today with the only intention being to say hello….and while I’m thinking about it, I’m sending SNAIL MAIL to my mom! she’ll love it and who gets a gift like that anymore? Thank you!
Mika!
love it! Snail mail to your mom… she will be so grateful! And it all goes around. I’ve started to give more presents on my enewsletter because of this principle too. Because I don’t really need all of this STUFF you know? It’s just stuff. And we need to create connection and community if we are ever going to get out of this mess.
